How to Make Field Goal Posts for Your Backyard

Even though a football is enough to set up some quick plays in the backyard, goal posts allow you to include field goals in your play. It is impractical to create goal posts built to NFL specifications, unless your backyard is the size of a football field. Instead, your main concern is building with the proper proportions between individual bars. PVC pipes are the optimal material for this craft, as they are easy to cut and glue and also lightweight, helping you avoid serious injury during play.

... Vertical posts in the NFL extend at least 30 feet above the crossbar.

Things You\’ll Need

  • Hacksaw

  • 3-Inch-Diameter Pvc Pipe

  • Post Hole Diggers

  • Two 3-Inch-Diameter, 90-Degree Elbow Fittings

  • Measuring Tape

  • Pvc Solvent Cement

  • 3-Inch Diameter, 90-Degree Tee Fitting

Step 1

Place the 3-inch-diameter PVC pipe on a flat surface. Cut five pieces from the piping using a hacksaw: one 4 feet long, two 9 feet long, and two 2 feet 9 inches long.

Step 2

Apply PVC solvent cement to one edge of each of the 2-foot-9-inch pipes. Fit the edges on the right and left sides of the tee fitting to create the goal post's crossbar.

Step 3

Apply cement to the edge of the 4-foot-long piece and fit it on the remaining edge of the tee fitting. Apply cement to one edge of each of the 9-foot-long pieces and fit an elbow fitting on each piece.

Step 4

Apply cement to the free edges of the two 2-foot-9-inch pieces and fit them on the elbow fittings so that the 9-foot-long pieces are parallel to the 4-foot piece, but on the opposite side of the crossbar.

Step 5

Dig a hole 3 inches in diameter and 1 foot deep using a pair of post hole diggers. Lift the goal post and fit the 4-foot-long piece inside the hole.

Tip

If you cannot find solvent cement, you can also use polyurethane glue.
