... Glue Guns: The crafter\’s best friend.

Permanently attaching felt to cotton can be done using some commonly found tools from around the home. If attempting to bond felt to cotton using a glue, you must select the appropriate type to keep the felt from absorbing it and becoming hard, as well as becoming misshapen. Hot glue guns are the prefect tool for such applications, allowing felt to fuse to the surface of the cotton.

Step 1

Draw the shape you want onto the surface of your felt using a pencil.

Step 2

Cut out the shape using a pair of sharp scissors. It is best to use scissors only intended for fabrics to attain clean and even cuts.

Step 3

Plug in your glue gun and allow it to heat up to operating temperature with a stick of glue inserted into the rear of the gun. When glue begins to ooze from its tip, the glue gun is ready for use. Place the felt where you want it on the cotton and look at it from a few feet away to ensure you put it in the right place. Ensure the cotton as well as the back of the felt are free of any lint, debris and are dry at this time.

Step 4

Apply a bead of glue on the back of the piece of felt around its edges, no less than 1/4 inch from the edge, as well as in the center to provide more strength. Work quickly as the glue will cool and become less adhesive with each passing second.

Step 5

Press the piece of felt against the cotton to force the semi-liquid glue into the fibers of both the cotton and the felt, ensuring a strong bond between the two. Set aside the fabric to cool for 10 to 15 minutes before handling.

Tip

Add a few stitches using a needle and thread of like color through the felt and cotton to ensure the felt is permanently bonded to the cotton.

Warning

Avoid any contact between skin and the tip of the glue gun to avoid burns.
