Things You\’ll Need

  • Plastic bin

  • Tape measure

  • Marker

  • Pool noodle

  • Box cutter

  • Plastic rope (thin enough to thread through the pool noodle)

  • Lighter or matches

  • Glue gun (optional)

  • Silk lei (optional)

Supplies needed to build a floating beverage boat

Step 1: Measure the Bin

Use the tape measure to measure the length and width of the plastic bin. Subtract 2 inches from each of these measurements.

Use a tape measure to determine the length of each side of the bin

Step 2: Measure the Noodle

Measure and mark the new length and width of the bin on the pool noodle with a marker. You will need to mark four pieces on the noodle, two for the length of the plastic bin and two for the width. For example, if the length of the plastic bin measured 12 inches, mark two 10-inch portions on the pool noodle.

Step 3: Cut the Noodle

Use the box cutter to cut the noodle on the marks you made.

Warning

Use caution when using the box cutter.

Tip

If the plastic bin is extra thick, a cordless drill may be needed to create the holes.

Step 4: Thread Rope Through the Noodle

Thread one end of the rope through one pool noodle piece and place it next to the corresponding side of the bin.

Thread the rope through the first piece of pool noodle

Step 5: Tie a Knot

After the rope has been threaded throughout all of the noodle pieces and holes, pull the rope tight so the pieces are snug against the plastic bin. Tie the loose ends of the rope together and cut off any excess rope.

Tighten the rope and tie the loose ends together

Tip

Hold a lighter or match to the knot for a few seconds to melt the rope together. This will prevent fraying and ensure the knot does not come undone.

Step 6: Decorate the Beverage Boat

Use a glue gun to add any finishing decorations to the floating beverage boat such as a silk lei. Avoid using decorations that will be damaged when they get wet.
