How to Make a Hill Out of Paper in a Shoe Box

Things You\’ll Need

  • Newspaper

  • Glue

  • Green construction paper

  • Scissors

... Shaping hills adds depth to a shoebox diorama.

One of the reasons you may choose to create a diorama instead of drawing a picture is to give a three-dimensional effect to your project. This means that the foreground you use in your diorama shoebox does not have to be flat. If the scene you are trying to create requires a hilly terrain, you can create those hills with paper. While you can cut out flat hill shapes to glue into the background, you can also create three-dimensional hills to cover the bottom of the box.

Step 1

Scrunch up some newspaper to create a ball about the size of the hill you want to make. Pack the newspaper tightly so it forms a solid foundation for your hill.

Step 2

Cut pieces of green construction paper that fit over the wad of newspaper. If you cut one piece of paper to cover the entire hill, make sure you position any excess paper toward the back of the shoe box where it won't be seen. Otherwise, it is best to cut several smaller pieces and piece them together to create your hill.

Step 3

Glue the wad of newspaper into position within the shoebox.

Step 4

Spread glue onto the back of the green construction paper pieces and attach them to the newspaper mound until it is completely covered in green. Allow it to dry before adding other objects such as trees, bushes, buildings or people onto the hill.

Tip

Use more than one wad of newspaper glued next to each other to create a larger hill.
